Courage:

We are all afraid of something, all the time
I am afraid of sharks
Most people are afraid of death
Courage means you keep on going, anyway
Most people would be afraid to live my dad’s life,
He is in a wheelchair
He has undergone many surgeries
But he keeps on going, anyway
Thousands of men and women are fighting in Iraq on Christmas Day
I think that’s unfair, I bet they are afraid
But they keep on going, anyway
When I become afraid, I think about my dad, and the soldiers
And I keep on going, anyway

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.’s men’s basketball team made sure the wait was worth it.

The Golden Eagles, finally playing their first home game of the 2009-10 season, posted a 101-43 victory Friday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (5-1) won its fourth straight game and had five players reach double figures in scoring.

The Golden Eagles led from start to finish after scoring the first 15 points of the game. Cal State L.A. led, 43-24, at halftime and then broke the game wide open with a 58-19 advantage in the second half.

Dwayne Jones led the Golden Eagles with 21 points and four assists, while Chris Fields added 16 points and 11 rebounds and Carl Hoffman had a season-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Leland Jones had 12 points and nine rebounds and Trevor Hopkins had 12 points and six rebounds.

Love the game, but can’t play December 23, 2009

It’s hard to sit on the bench in any sport. I know this from personal experience, though some time ago.

It’s especially hard in basketball, it seems to me. There are so few players — only five can play at any one time, and then there’s the tyranny of the clock: only 32 minutes to be parceled out in high school games, 40 in college.

At Middlebury College, two of the best players on this year’s talented team (5-0 so far, with two more home games this week), Kevin Kelleher and Ashton Coghlan, are sitting on the bench and haven’t played a minute this season.

Kelleher has no prospect of playing and Coghlan has only a vague hope. Both would love to be competing, but they are out with debilitating, chronic injuries.

One of the two senior captains this year, Kevin is a versatile player, tall and well built, 6-5, 215, with a nice long-distance shot, so valuable in today’s game.

Congratulations to Chris Barnum on being accepted to Stanford University on early decision. Chris is also a recruited-Walk On for the Stanford team next year and will play for the Cardinal and coach Johnny Dawkins. We are especially excited about Chris’s accomplishments, because Chris is a home grown product of the Hoop Masters program and has been playing for Hoop Masters teams since he was 9 years old. Chris is currently starting guard on the Harvard Westlake team and is known around southern California as a stanch defender, who hustles and gives opposing player nightmares. Add his increased outside shooting and you have a quality player.

Chris has worked hard in the classroom and on the court to achieve this life long goal of becoming a Stanford Student-Athlete. Chris played club ball for Hoop Masters, Team Ariza and Compton Magic.
