Trevor Ariza Camp

Trevor Ariza of the Orlando Magic came to Santa Monica this week to put on a camp for the program that gave him his start in basketball, Hoop Masters. Trevor played for Hoop Masters from 5-8th grades before moving on to Westchester High School, UCLA, NY knicks and now the Magic. Trevor feels a deep since of gratitude to the Hoop Masters program and especially John Fischer who was very instrumental in his early development as a basketball player and young person. Trevor feels it is important for to give back to the program that gave so much to him.

Trevor hopes to make this an annual event which benefits the the Hoop Masters scholarship program. This is the first year of doing the camp, and he is happy with the turnout of 35 kids to the camp. Trevor said, “I look forward to the camp growing each year”.

Jerome Green, Director of the Hoop Masters camp program says. “Watching Trevor with kids is a very special treat. There is no pretense in his approach to kids. He is just real with them and they really connect to him. Trevor is very patient with the kids”. Trevor worked with each of the campers on the first day of camp and had two rap sessions, one with the 6-10 year old group and another the 11-14 year old group. Trevor expressed how he wanted to hear from the kids themselves, answer their questions, and encourage them to continue to have fun playing the game. One of the most touching aspects of his talks was when he impressed upon the campers how much he loves the game. It was a geniune expression.

Trevor took a couple campers aside and showed them his favorite move. Coming up from the short corner catching the ball, doing a rocker move, into a spin for a layup(in his case a dunk). The campers really had fun learning this move. Trevor also encouraged all the campers to continue to work on their fundamentals, including developing their week hand, learning how to play defense and as they get older taking the fun of the game and start developing a work ethic.

Campers won prizes from Nike Basketball and had a fun day of learning some new skills.
